In September 1993 in a room rented from a bank building,
Lowcountry Presbyterian Church began worshipping under the leadership of our organizing
pastor, Dr. Frank R. Sells. Before the year ended, the small
congregation moved into its own sanctuary they built on ten acres of an undeveloped
area near the tiny town of Bluffton, South Carolina - at that time, barely
noticed by the locals and vacationers on their way to and from Hilton Head
Island. In June of the following year, the congregation of 88 members
was formally chartered by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and
Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery.
Since then, the Bluffton area has experienced phenomenal growth, and
Lowcountry Presbyterian has been growing with the community, spiritually and
in numbers. Today our church family numbers about 450 people, and our
ministries extend throughout what is today known as greater Bluffton
(including Sun City Hilton Head where many of our members reside). To meet this influx of new residents and expand our
outreach to the growing communities, we moved into a magnificent new
sanctuary in October 2000, at our current location at the corner of Highway
278 and Simmonsville Road. The original sanctuary has since been
extensively remodeled and now serves as our Fellowship Hall and a meeting
facility for several area organizations. Both facilities are "wheelchair-friendly."
Rev. Dr. Jerry Kramer has served as the Senior Pastor for our congregation
for approximately eight years.
Jerry brings outstanding pastoral skills in the areas of leadership, healing and enthusiasm. He has post-seminary training in
conflict resolution, pastoral care, church revitalization and worship
leadership. A Midwesterner with nearly 40 years
of experience serving in various pastoral positions, Jerry was previously the
interim pastor for Providence Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island.
He and his wife Barbara, who is one of our leaders in the Stephen
Ministry program, currently reside in Moss Creek Plantation. Their four grown children
and their families all live in the Midwest. In addition to their
children and grandchildren, their special interests include golf,
reading, furniture refinishing and travel. Lowcountry Presbyterian is
very fortunate that he and Barbara are with us and continue to serve our
congregation.
Worship is the heart of our corporate life. We offer
two Sunday morning worship services, at 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM, with Sunday
School for adults between the services, and for children during the second
service, except during the summer.
Whether you are a visitor to our area, a new resident or a seasonal
resident, we invite you to worship with us this Sunday - and we will make
you feel welcome. And, if you are seeking a church home, give us the
opportunity to meet that need. Either our Pastor or one of our Elders will be happy to
talk with you.
We are a Stephen Ministry congregation.
